19th Cycling for Sight with Blind Stokers Club

A stoker is the person in the rear of a tandem bicycle.  The captain is in the front.  The Blind Stokers Club allows a blind or visually impaired (BVI) person to enjoy the freedoms of bicycling from the stoker's position.

I have been a part of the Blind Stokers Club since 2012 when the founder of the club asked me to volunteer as the event photographer for their annual Cycling for Sight event.  This event is the only fundraising event of the year and provides needed funding for the club as well as additional funding for the San Diego Center for the Blind.  The club provides tandem bicycles to captains in need, cycling gear for stokers and funding for special trips and events.  Last year, the club spent a week in Death Valley National Park. This year, we hosted a rock-climbing school in Joshua Tree National Park.  We are primarily a San Diego based organization, but we have members from Washington, Colorado, Texas and beyond.  I am overseeing a hiking splinter group with our members.  We have been teaching some of our BVI members techniques used by world class blind mountaineers to help them venture out of the city and into the wild.  This organization has given me the opportunity to make new friends while helping out in the community.  Your tax deductible donation will provide training and counseling to blind and vision-impaired adults in the region. A portion of each dollar will enable more BVI people to enjoy the simple pleasures of riding a bike.
