My name is Launa Hardy. In 1996 I was diagnosed with a rare eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, a group of hereditary diseases causing retinal degeneration. In 2005, shortly after becoming legally blind, and losing my driver’s license, I soon became a student at the San Diego Center for the blind. It was there where I first learn to read Braille, learned mobility utilizing a cane, and learned the fundamentals of living with vision loss. I continued my rehabilitation at the Braille Institute and eventually went back to school to pursue a degree. While discovering a new way of living with vision loss and having an additional physical disability of hearing loss that developed later in years, I went on to train for my very first guide dog in 2007 with Guide Dogs for the Blind. I soon became involved with the guide dog association, and meeting many friends from different walks of life. Today I am the president for our San Diego alumni, and Secretary for my writers’ chapter. It was shortly after I began to volunteer at the braille, I had met a dear friend who introduced me to an amazing organization; The Blind Stokers Club. I began riding with the Blind Stokers in 2014 and enjoyed many amazing rides. It felt good to be part of a team, belonging to a club where friendship and support took front seat. After taking a little time off, I began riding with the club again in January 2019. Since my return, I have been on many adventures with my captain Ashley Gaze, together we have cycled through an amazing journey. I am happy to be supporting the school that helped me discover that life doesn’t stop because of vision loss, it’s done differently. The San Diego Center for the Blind has helped me to step into the world of the unknown while believing in myself. As a mother of grown children and having two that work on the front line in the medical industry, I know firsthand the difficulty we all face during this pandemic. Through these difficult times, I also know that organizations such as the San Diego Center for the Blind still need our help. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God Bless,

Launa Hardy
