Changing worlds with photography.
AWAMAKI - Peru - Photographer Emily Hlavac Green
Donors like you have helped photographers fundraise 100% of project-related costs since 2014! - All Donations are in USD -
My name is Emily Hlavac Green and I have been selected by Photographers Without Borders to travel to Ollantaytambo, Peru in May 2017 to capture the work of a unique charity called Awamaki.
Awamaki's goal is to help skilled Andean women start and run their own businesses; investing in their creativity and connecting them to new economic markets for their knitted and woven products.
With your help I am able to contribute to the cause by documenting the entire process from beginning to end: the shearing of the alpaca, the sorting and cleaning process, spinning and dying of the yarn, and then the creation of the final artisan product. In addition, the life and community surrounding.
The media I produce will advance their goal of creative outreach for women's empowerment projects.
Your support is greatly appreciated as I fundraise for this very special cause.
About Awamaki
- Awamaki works with women cooperatives in communities near Ollantaytambo, Peru. They showcase their work through a tourism program and operate a local fair-trade store selling woven, knit and hand-spun goods.
The Awamaki Women's Cooperative Program includes 60 women in two weaving cooperatives, a knitting cooperative of over 15 women and a sewing cooperative of three; all of which are from indigenous communities. In addition they have also started working with a group of 10 young Quechua adults who will be hand-spinning luxury alpaca yarns for export.

- About me
I am a photographer from New Zealand, living in New York City, USA.
I have photographed over the past eight years across portraiture, travel, food and lifestyle. I have been fortunate enough to work on a sustainable energy documentary in Tonga, workshops in Shanghai and last year was awarded the PDN Taste Grand Professional prize for a series documenting the wine harvest in Central Otago, New Zealand.
Living in New York City I'm feeling more than ever the global impact of consumerism and the significance of supporting small, ethical businesses. I want to use my creative skillset to a) proactively fight for a cause I believe in and b) further a project which would allow me to travel and document cultures in other parts of the world. For me, being involved in a project that is creative, sustainable and helps benefit women in business is a perfect match.

About Photographers Without Borders
Every year, our photographers and videographers donate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of their time to document the work of grassroots initiatives that are making a real change in this world where it is most needed. By capturing, honouring and witnessing humanity at its best, we are not only inspiring many, but we are forging new narratives of what is and what is possible.
You can help by supporting our photographers and videographers (See the side bar to the right to see fundraisers for our most recent recruits).
Each of our official photographers/videographers is assigned a GroupRev fundraising page by PWB upon acceptance. These pages are a privilege we offer that are intended to make our programs accessible to all and enable our volunteer photographers/videographers to raise their program fees and subsidize or cover these necessary project-related expenses:
- Airfare
- Visa's
- Vaccinations
- Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The following expenses are the sole responsibility of the photographer/videographer:
- Privately arranged travel / Equipment & Equipment Insurance / Software / Extra Baggage Fees / Donation perks / Clothing / Postage/Postcard / Prints / Etc.
Photographers Without Borders® (PWB) envisions a world where we all put ourselves in each others' shoes and work together. Our mission is to inform and inspire positive change by visually communicating the ways that grassroots initiatives are addressing problems in their communities. PWB is registered as a charity in the United States with 501(c)(3) status and is registered as a not-for-profit organization in Canada. All donations are calculated in US Dollars and are tax-deductible for Americans and Canadians with US income.
PWB is not responsible for any donations made outside of these pages.
Any overage amounts raised on GroupRev will be donated with the photographers direction, 100% to the Organization, 100% to PWB or split 50/50, between the photographer's/videographer's assigned cause and PWB, which is also a volunteer-run organization.
PLEASE DONATE GENEROUSLY !

Yo B! Can you bring me back something made from an alpaca? Remember when I got that baby alpaca wool with the intention of making a jersey and I had to throw it away at the Perth airport? I'm still dark about that. |

Wooo hooo!
Thanks to all of you who have donated so far we have just ticked over the 25% fundraising mark. To celebrate I spent a snowy day last week creating some hand drawn and ink alpaca cards to send out to all of you great supporters - note - alpacas are difficult to draw. If you know anyone else out there that might fancy a unique, slightly odd-looking piece of original alpaca art please share the love.
Again, Muchas Gracias for your support in getting to this stage!
Emily x
