Laurie's 5th Song Cycle - 2020

Supporting VOX Femina in isolation Learn More

Dear Friends and Family,

It looks like 2020 is going to go down in history as the year that NOTHING was the same!  So, rather than cycling/running/walking/strolling (as in, pushing a stroller) down the beautiful Ballona Creek Bike Path, as we've done in the past, this year the Voxxies are all "doing our own thing" and creativity is running wild in our hardy little band of singers!

So, for my challenge, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, I am pledging to re-pot, refresh and/or re-design 15 plants (one for each day of the fundraiser) from my little balcony "garden" (which is more like a jungle right now!) between April 21 and May 5. My purpose is three-fold: 1. To raise much-needed funds for Vox Femina, which has been such a HUGE part of my life for the past 21 years; 2. To engage in something that I enjoy, but have been neglecting, and 3. To create a beautiful little space where I can enjoy spending time OUTSIDE.

In exchange, I would really appreciate it if you could "toss a few coins" into the pot in support of this project. Only you know how much is right for you to give. Every dollar helps - really! It's super easy & only takes 30 seconds (if you don't think about it too much).

Photos and updates will be forthcoming, but I could use some encouragement, too (like the cheerleaders at the turn-around points, remember?)

Thank you SO much for supporting Vox. It really means a lot to me that the people I love enjoy participating in the things I love doing. We can’t WAIT until we can sing for you again! (I’m so tired of videos already – I want to see your smiling faces!) Your support is especially appreciated at this crazy time in history.

Lots of big hugs,

~ Laurie ~

They say singing to your plants will help them grow. So if you just play them some Vox they should burst right out of their new pots. Go Mom!

I just want to thank each one of you for your part in helping me exceed my goal and Vox to exceed our overall goal.  Your support is particularly precious in these precarious times, so I wanted to make sure that you understand how grateful we are!  From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Grateful hugs,

~Laurie~

[Until I can figure out how to get pictures into the Updates, you'll just have to go out to the main page to see the illustrations of what I'm talking about. It's a work in progress...  ;-)  ]

I chose two big fat succulents that were so top-heavy that they kept falling over - clear candidates for re-potting. The first was sort of Y-shaped and nicely proportioned. After tapping & squeezing the sides of the plastic pot, I carefully turned it over to extract the plant and was delighted to find a pattern like a daisy on the bottom.  Who in their right mind would have taken the time to chose 7 little clay pot shards exactly the right size and arrange them just so, covering each one of the holes in the bottom of the pot? You could even see the little circular mark that each hole had left on its cover.  Sweet.  But the cool design had to go, so that I could ruffle up the roots a bit before putting it in its new home. It looks a lot more sturdy now.

The second one wasn't so pleasing to the eye. It had grown very tall, but lost most of its lower leaves, so that it was shaped more like a palm tree. This one was a candidate for some re-designing before being re-potted. I took a sharp knife and literally cut in half, making two plants out of one.  The bottom half has all the roots & will be busy generating some new leaves; the top half has all the leaves & will be busy generating some new roots.  But these succulents are pretty resourceful.  I have faith that they will adjust just fine.

I'll be tackling some other ungainly plants in the coming days, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Vox Femina is being very resourceful, too, finding creative ways to keep engaged with each other, with our music and with our beloved audience & supporters. Check our FaceBook page, Instagram feed & YouTube channel for some delightful videos. We are always grateful for your support, but especially so during these uncertain times, when everything's been turned upside down. Thank you!
